Create a bulk bill claim for Medicare Online

How to process a Medicare Bulk Bill in Tyro Health Online

Written by Nick

Before you start

Before creating a bulk bill claim, ensure:

  • The servicing provider has been set up for Medicare Online Claiming in Tyro Health Online.

  • The required patient and service details are available.

  • If using the Tyro Health Assignment of Benefit (AoB) method, the assignor's mobile number is available to receive the SMS agreement link.

Even if a provider has previously registered with Medicare for online claiming, they must still be set up for Medicare Online Claiming in Tyro Health Online. The Tyro Health Online Customer Success team can assist with the required Medicare Online Claiming forms.

Step by step Guide

Create a bulk bill claim

  1. From the left-hand menu, select Get paid.

  2. Select Medicare Online.

  3. When asked How should this claim be processed?, select Bulk billed.

  4. Enter Invoice reference (optional)
This can be a unique reference such as an invoice number from your practice management or accounting system. The reference is retained and can be used to search for the transaction later.

  5. Select the Servicing location and Provider.
The Specialty & provider number will automatically populate based on the selected provider.

  6. Select a Payee provider.
By default, the servicing provider is also the payee provider. If required, you can nominate a different payee provider (for example, the principal provider in a group practice), allowing Medicare payments to be directed to that provider's bank account registered with Medicare.

Enter patient details

Under Patient details:

Existing patient

If you've previously submitted a claim for the patient:

  1. Search for the patient by name.

  2. Select the patient from the results.

  3. Their saved details will automatically populate.

To confirm their Medicare card details, select Verify Medicare details. A timestamp will display showing when the details were last verified.

New patient

If this is the patient's first claim in Tyro Health Online:

  1. Select + Add new patient.

  2. Enter the patient's details.

Add referral details (if required)

If applicable, enter:

  • Referring provider name

  • Provider number

  • Referral issue date

  • Referral period

Referral details are typically not required for General Practitioners.

Add service items

  1. Search for a service using:

    • MBS item code

    • Item description

    • The service drop-down list

  2. The Date of service defaults to today's date. Update it if required.

  3. To add additional services, select + Add another item.

To remove a service, select Remove.

Only MBS item codes applicable to both the servicing provider and the selected date of service are displayed.

Select the Assignment of Benefit (AoB) agreement method

After adding your service items, select the Agreement method.

  • Select External if the patient's Assignment of Benefit has already been captured outside of Tyro Health Online (or is being captured before claim submission).

    • Examples include practices capturing pre-assignment.

    • When selecting External, you acknowledge that the Assignment of Benefit has already been accepted before submitting the claim.

  • Select Tyro Health if you want Tyro Health Online to manage capturing Assignment of Benefit.

    • You will be asked to confirm:

      • Whether the assignor is the patient (defaults to Yes).

      • The assignor's mobile number, which is pre-populated from the patient record if available. You can manually enter the number if required.

Submit the claim

Once all required fields have been completed:

  1. Select Submit.

If you selected Tyro Health as the Agreement method:

  • An assignment of benefit agreement link is generated and sent via SMS to the assignor.

  • The agreement status is set to "pending" and the Medicare claim status remains unsubmitted.

  • Once the assignment of benefit agreement link is approved, the claim is automatically submitted to Medicare.

If you selected External, the claim is submitted immediately after clicking submit.

The patients SMS Assignment link is valid for 48 hours.
If the assignor does not assign their consent within this time period, you can duplicate the invoice to resubmit the claim and resend AoB. More info

View the claim

After submission, a claim summary page displays the claim details and current status.

Download the completed Assignment of Benefit

When the claim is approved, you can send or download the completed agreement from the invoice page.
