Using Tyro Health Online to save or update payment cards for patients? Did you experience an error on updating or saving a new payment card for a patient?

Tyro Health Online has a feature to request payment card details from patients or, with permission from the cardholder, for providers to enter and save payment card details for future services. These features do not require a related immediate charge for services.

On occasion, you may find that particular card fails to save or fails to update. Our portal may report a failed card save, a suspect fraud flag or another card error. However, this same card may work without issue for standard charges.

Unfortunately, due to the prevalence of certain fraud technics known as "carding", some payment card issuers may incorrectly flag a card save without a corresponding charge as potentially fraudulent. To save card details, we use a special card validation transaction to ensure the account is valid and can be charged prior to saving. Cards which fail this validation cannot be saved. This process may involve a temporary $1 validation which is immediately voided - your patient will never be charged for simply saving card details.

Some card issues will not accept validation only transactions which are used by our system to verify the account prior to saving. These same card issuers may accept a standard charge transaction with details that can be saved for future.

If you encounter an error on saving or updating patient card details, consider:

  • Requesting a different payment card from the patient; or

  • Waiting to save card details until there is at least one standard charge transactions.

Also note that patients who use Apple Pay or Google Pay will not be able to save those details. Apple and Google's terms of service require us to obtain cardholder consent for each charge.
